Samsung backs more efficient and automated homes with Bespoke AI and SmartThings
Samsung SmartLabX research reflects European households’ interest in automating tasks, monitoring energy consumption and improving security through connected appliances and artificial intelligence.

The home is a place of comfort, but it also involves numerous everyday tasks: remembering wash cycles, checking that appliances are switched off or keeping an eye on energy bills that can rise without being immediately noticed. The Samsung Bespoke AI and SmartThings proposition aims to simplify this management through connected devices capable of learning from each household’s routines.
Research by Samsung SmartLabX, an analysis programme focused on studying how European households live and what they expect from technology, indicates growing interest in homes capable of taking on a greater share of daily tasks. According to its data, a quarter of European consumers who have Samsung Bespoke AI appliances already use their functions to automate tasks, control devices remotely and manage energy consumption.
Security, efficiency and less effort at home
Users’ priorities focus on three areas. 36% want greater security and the peace of mind of knowing that their home is protected and working properly even when they are not there. Another 41% want a more energy-efficient home, with less waste and a lower impact on bills. In addition, 36% expect artificial intelligence to make household tasks quicker and easier.
Bespoke AI appliances and the SmartThings platform are designed to meet these needs as a connected ecosystem. The devices communicate with one another and provide users with tools to monitor the home, automate actions and check information about consumption.
According to Samsung’s proposition, the aim is not to add technological complexity to everyday life, but to transfer part of that management to the system itself. In this way, many decisions are made automatically, while users can intervene whenever they consider it necessary through the SmartThings app.
Monitoring energy consumption
Energy costs have become a common concern for European households. Samsung’s material states that household electricity prices in Europe remain above pre-2022 levels, according to Eurostat data cited by the company. In this context, managing consumption efficiently is no longer a secondary issue, but a priority.
The AI Energy Mode and SmartThings Energy functions address this issue by automatically monitoring the consumption of compatible appliances. These devices can monitor energy use in real time, learn household patterns and make certain adjustments without users having to enter instructions constantly.
In a washing machine, for example, the water temperature can be set by default to a lower level and offset by extending the cycle duration. In Samsung refrigerators with artificial intelligence, the system can adjust cooling intensity by optimising the compressor and defrost cycles. To do this, it takes factors such as how often the door is opened and the refrigerator’s load level into account.
These adjustments are made continuously and are intended to help appliances operate more efficiently during the day and night, without compromising food preservation. The SmartThings app allows users to view household energy consumption and check how much was saved during a particular month thanks to AI Energy Mode.
The availability of these functions depends on compatible devices. AI Energy Mode is available on Android and iOS devices and requires a Wi-Fi connection, a Samsung account and activation through the SmartThings Energy service. The compatible appliances mentioned include certain washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, televisions and energy meters.
Routines that adapt to everyday life
Automation is not limited to the individual operation of each appliance. Through SmartThings, connected devices can communicate with one another and adapt to each household’s routines. The platform allows users to create actions that fit into daily life without requiring constant manual programming.
One of the possibilities described is scheduling the washing machine to operate by default during off-peak hours, provided the user has a compatible smart tariff. In this way, the appliance can take advantage of periods with lower energy rates.
The system can also optimise the refrigerator compressor’s performance during periods of lower use and adjust the climate control to reach a comfortable temperature before the user arrives home. The Bespoke AI proposition is based on appliances progressively learning the household’s routines and adapting their operation accordingly.
Remote control expands these options. From SmartThings, users can access connected appliances even when they are away from home. Samsung’s material cites actions such as starting the tumble dryer, checking the oven or changing the temperature from anywhere. Voice control is also considered an additional way of interacting with the devices.
Technology integrated into the home’s design
For Samsung, living smart is not simply about adding more technology, but about improving the everyday experience. The aim is to have more time, produce less waste and retain the peace of mind that the home continues to function properly even when routines become complicated.
The intelligence integrated into the Bespoke AI ecosystem works in the background and adjusts over time to the way each family lives. Small changes to washing, cooling or climate-control cycles combine with remote control and consumption information to provide more automated home management.
