Public transport exceeds 506.5 million passengers in June, 2% more than in 2025
More than 506.5 million passengers used public transport in June, according to provisional INE data. Urban transport grew by 3.1%, while interurban transport recorded a decline of 0.6%.

Public transport recorded more than 506.5 million passengers in June 2026, representing an increase of 2.0% compared with the same month in 2025, according to provisional data from the Passenger Transport Statistics (TV) of the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The trend varied according to the type of service. Urban transport increased by 3.1% year-on-year, while interurban transport fell by 0.6%. Meanwhile, special and discretionary transport reached more than 46.1 million users, 3.0% more than a year earlier.
Urban transport exceeds 314 million passengers
Urban transport was used by more than 314.2 million passengers in June, 3.1% more than in the same month of 2025. Within this group, the metro experienced the strongest growth, with an annual increase of 5.5%.
Urban bus transport also increased, although at a more moderate rate of 1.6% compared with June of the previous year.
The number of metro passengers grew in all cities with this means of transport. Palma recorded the largest increase, at 11.5%, while Madrid recorded the smallest, with a rise of 3.8%.
Decline in interurban transport
More than 146.1 million passengers used interurban transport in June. This figure represents a decline of 0.6% compared with the same month of 2025.
The trend varied by mode of transport. Interurban bus transport recorded an increase of 5.2%, air transport grew by 2.6% and maritime transport advanced by 1.7%. By contrast, rail transport fell by 8.3% year-on-year.
The statistics include commuter and high-speed services under rail transport. In the case of commuter services, Renfe and all regional rail operators are included. The High-Speed category comprises AVE, AVLO, OUIGO and Iryo.
Special and discretionary transport grows by 3%
Special and discretionary transport recorded more than 46.1 million users in June, 3.0% more than in the same month of the previous year.
Special transport increased by 1.9% and exceeded 24.8 million passengers. Within this category, school transport grew by 2.1%, while workplace transport recorded a rise of 1.5%.
Meanwhile, discretionary transport reached more than 21.2 million passengers, with year-on-year growth of 4.3%.
Murcia, Extremadura and Asturias lead bus increases
By autonomous community, the number of bus transport passengers recorded its largest increases in the Region of Murcia, at 12.0%; Extremadura, at 10.0%; and the Principality of Asturias, at 8.6%.
The Community of Madrid was the only region to record a decline in this type of transport, with a fall of 6.4% compared with June 2025.
The INE does not publish separate data for the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, the Chartered Community of Navarre and La Rioja, or for the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, in order to maintain statistical confidentiality.
Monthly statistics on passengers transported
The Passenger Transport Statistics aim to provide monthly information on the number of passengers transported by urban, interurban, special and discretionary services.
Urban transport analyses bus and metro services. Interurban transport includes buses, railways, aircraft and ships. In addition, the statistical operation incorporates information on special and discretionary transport by bus.
Bus transport is studied through a sample survey. In the case of rail transport, the number of passengers is calculated from information provided by rail operators. Air transport data are supplied by Civil Aviation, while the number of maritime passengers disembarking is compiled from information provided by Puertos del Estado.
The INE has updated the Passenger Transport Statistics data for the same month of the previous year. All results from this operation are available in INEbase, together with monthly and annual information and the table annex containing data by autonomous community and type of transport.
The statistics are compiled in accordance with the European Statistics Code of Practice. The organisation also provides methodological information and a standardised methodological report on this operation.
