La 1 leads on eclipse day with 14.8% and ‘Aquí la Tierra’ reaches all-time record
RTVE’s special coverage of the total solar eclipse made La 1 the day’s leading channel, with a 14.8% share. ‘Aquí la Tierra: especial eclipse’ achieved its highest-ever share, 30.5% in its second segment, and recorded the day’s peak minute.

La 1 led the day of the total solar eclipse in Spain with a 14.8% share, 2.6 points ahead of its main competitor. The channel was the most watched during the early hours, with 10%; in the morning, with 16.9%; in the afternoon, with 17.9%; and in prime time, with 14.8%.
The special programming rolled out by RTVE made coverage of the astronomical phenomenon the focus of the day. ‘Aquí la Tierra: especial eclipse’ achieved its highest-ever figures, while ‘Directo al grano’, ‘La Hora de La 1’, ‘Mañaneros 360’ and the friendly match between Deportivo de La Coruña and Real Madrid, played as part of the Teresa Herrera Trophy, also recorded leading figures.
‘Aquí la Tierra’ achieves its highest-ever share
The day’s outstanding result came from ‘Aquí la Tierra: especial eclipse’, presented by Jacob Petrus and Marc Santandreu. The programme maintained a special two-and-a-half-hour broadcast and averaged 1,768,000 viewers, a 24.7% share and 5,545,000 contacts on La 1 and Canal 24 horas.
The second segment of the special, broadcast during the total eclipse, was the day’s most watched programme. It averaged 2,381,000 viewers, a 30.5% share and 3,817,000 unique viewers. This figure represented the programme’s highest-ever share.
The broadcast beat the competition by more than 20 points and led in every region and every age group, from viewers aged 4 to those over 75. The figure was particularly notable among young people aged 13 to 24, where it achieved a 34.5% share.
Across the two broadcasts, between 18:30 and 20:57, the most watched minute was recorded at 20:33, with 2,658,000 viewers and a 34.1% share on La 1 and Canal 24 horas. This made that moment the day’s peak minute.
‘Directo al grano’ leads the hours before the eclipse
Eclipse coverage began earlier on ‘Directo al grano’, which offered an extended special edition focused on the phenomenon. The programme, presented by Marta Flich and Martín Barreiro, attracted an average of 1,018,000 viewers and achieved a 13% share.
Almost 3.5 million people watched some part of this special edition, which led the hours before the eclipse and set up coverage of the phenomenon on La 1 and Canal 24 horas.
Football maintains the lead during the night
After the eclipse, La 1 retained the lead with the friendly match between Deportivo de La Coruña and Real Madrid, played as part of the Teresa Herrera Trophy. The match ended in a 1–0 victory for Mourinho’s team and was the most watched broadcast in its slot.
The match averaged 1,289,000 viewers, a 15.1% share and 4,323,000 unique viewers. After the final whistle, the new episode of ‘Maestros de la Costura Celebrity’ recorded an 8.6% share and was the night’s most reached offering, with up to 2,334,000 unique viewers.
Strong figures for the morning schedule
The day also produced notable results for La 1’s news and current affairs programmes. ‘TD Matinal’ continued to lead its slot with a 25.8% share on La 1 and Canal 24 horas. The news programme, presented by Mireia Alzuria and Álex Barreiro, attracted 712,000 unique viewers after growing by one point compared with the previous day.
Next, ‘La Hora de La 1’ retained its lead with an average of 422,000 viewers and a 23.9% share. The programme hosted by Silvia Intxaurrondo was watched at some point during its broadcast by 1,435,000 people.
The morning lead continued with ‘Mañaneros 360’. The magazine programme presented by Aida Bao and Miriam Moreno averaged 453,000 viewers, achieved a 15.4% share and came close to 2.3 million contacts.
TVE news programmes follow the eclipse
TVE’s news programmes made the total eclipse one of the day’s main stories and remained among RTVE’s most watched programmes. ‘Telediario 1’, presented by Lourdes Maldonado, recorded an average of 1,316,000 viewers and a 15.4% share on La 1 and Canal 24 horas.
In the evening, ‘Telediario 2’ offered a special edition during half-time in the football match. Javier Gutierrez presented the news programme from the Yebes Observatory, in a broadcast that attracted 1,237,000 viewers and a 14.4% share on La 1.
Almost two million users access RTVE Noticias
Interest in the phenomenon was also reflected in RTVE’s digital figures. Almost two million users, 1,944,000 in total, chose RTVE Noticias for information about current affairs related to the eclipse.
In addition, more than 2.3 million users —2,326,946— accessed content about the total solar eclipse on RTVE during the month. News stories accounted for 84.2% of the total. The most viewed report was ‘What time is the eclipse today? Start of totality by municipality’, followed by ‘Six models of eclipse glasses withdrawn for safety reasons’.
On RTVE Play, all the live streams combined reached 302,000 unique visitors on eclipse day and recorded 805,000 views. The most watched live broadcast was the ‘Aquí la Tierra’ special, with 202,000 unique users and 345,000 views.
Among on-demand content, almost 62,000 unique users watched a related video, generating 91,000 views. RTVE’s social media also accounted for a significant part of the coverage: content linked to the eclipse and the hashtag #EclipseRTVE generated 16.7 million views and 360,000 interactions.
The RTVE Noticias Facebook video titled ‘The day of two nights has arrived. One of the century’s astronomical events, the total #solareclipse’ was the most viewed piece of the coverage, with 4.4 million views.
La 2 maintains interest with quizzes and current affairs
The day also produced positive figures on La 2. ‘Saber y ganar’ was once again the channel’s most watched programme and the one with the highest share, with 482,000 viewers and 5.6%.
In access prime time, ‘Cifras y letras’ averaged 442,000 viewers and a 5.1% share. Meanwhile, ‘Malas lenguas’ achieved a 5.1% share and came close to 1.4 million unique viewers.
